Par 3’s

Par 3s are holes that range from 75-240 yards depending on the tees boxes you play. These holes can be reached by one shot in regulation and allows for 2 putts. Even though par 3s are the shorter holes people need to realize that they may still be some of the most challenging holes on the course.

Yardage

It’s a must to find the correct yardage on par 3s. What is the “actual” yardage and what is the “playing” yardage? Is the hole uphill or downhill? What is the effect of the wind direction? Can you run the ball up or is it all carry through the air? You will learn to answer these questions with experience.

Hole location

Finding the correct yardage for each hole location is the key to success. A par 3 green may accept as many as 2 or 3 different club choices from the tee due to length or angle. We still defer to the 70% rule an knowing your capabilities. It’s not necessary to aim at every hole location.

Find optimal landing

Choose the club on a par 3 that gives you the best chance to succeed and reduce the big miss. The hole may be 160 yards but allow you to hit a shot 125 yards in the air and work the ball on the ground. A well placed shot in the middle of the green can allow you a larger margin for error and increase chances of success.

Choosing the best club

Taking in all the information regarding distance, hole location and optimal landing area allows you to choose the best club for your abilities. This may be even more important than the swing itself. It takes a little time for most players to know what their distances and preferences may be. After learning your tendencies it becomes easier to choose the correct options.

Remember our 70% rule

Taking in all this information we’ve provided can feel overwhelming. What we would like to stress is knowing your OWN capabilities. Learning to play the game within your own personal abilities is the key to your own success and enjoyment. Choose the club from every situation that gives you the best chance of 70% success.
